Although the work is abstract I find, in my meanderings, that skewed versions of figurative elements creep in. Cramped buildings, darkened caves, folded cloths, often a reclining figure. They are uninvited but essential once they appear. At one time I fought these emerging images, afraid I might be foregoing some kind of abstract purity. Now I welcome them, as they offer a structure inside which I feel free to investigate. A place to hang my hat, so to speak.
My paintings have usually been heavy with paint, dense with history. Lately though I've found a lighter touch, the paint lightly washed or scraped.
The work rises from two main reference points - hastily made pastel drawings on kraft paper and/or collages made from oil crayon color block pieces.
My goal is to work with a ruthless eye, free of nostalgia, in service to each painting and its inner life.
